Bendable Smartphone

Scientists at Queen’s University’s Human Media Lab have established the world’s first full-colour, high-resolution and wireless bendable smartphone to integrate multitouch with bend input. The phone, which they have named ReFlex, enables users to experience physical, tactile feedback when interacting with their apps through bend gestures.

Bendable Smartphone – ReFlex

The phone, which they have named ReFlex, enables users to experience physical, tactile feedback when interacting with their apps through bend gestures.

Bend sensing units to imitate flipping of pages and playing video games without even touching the display screen of the device.

ReFlex has 720p LG OLED bendable display and is powered by an Android 4.4 (KitKat) with boards installed to the sides of the display.

With Android 4.4 pre-installed on the prototype, the versatile screen aims to stay sensible, adhering to the laws of physics. For instance, the more you flex the screen, the faster the pages of the eBook will flip.

Playing Angry Birds, you can bend the screen to flex the slingshot. With using haptic feedback, you will be able to feel the slingshot tightening up, or the pages turning on an eBook. The feedback enables you to browse your place on an online document without looking at the screen.

The smartphone also features a voice coil that enables the phone to mimic forces and friction through extremely detailed vibrations of the display screen.

In case you are wondering ReFex also works as the simple bendable smartphone.

Dr. Vertegaal thinks bendable smartphones will launch within five years. Queen’s researchers will unveil the ReFlex prototype at the tenth anniversary of Tangible Embedded and Embodied Interaction (TEI) Conference in Eindhoven, Netherlands on February 17th. The annual forum is the world’s premier conference on tangible human-computer interaction.

This research study was supported by Immersion Canada, Inc. and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Study Council of Canada (NSERC).
